Position Summary
As a Physical Testing Lab Tech you will be responsible for the
physical tests performed on all food, industrial, and oilfield
product samples received in the QC Lab. This includes all final
packed, in process, and grab samples. Accuracy in testing and
reporting is essential. Required to work alone during night shift,
holidays, and weekends. Must be able to work 12 hour rotating
shifts.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities
- Works independently to prepare solutions and calibrate
equipment.
- Prepares reagents and solutions by following documented
formulas. With the aid of a pushcart must have physical ability to
maneuver 5-gallon containers of liquid weighing approximately 40
pounds a distance of 30 feet, and locate on shelves 6 feet above
the floor. Required to utilize acids and bases and other commonly
used chemicals in the laboratory to make reagents. (Containers are
labeled for identification). Required to calibrate equipment and
maintain accurate records. Must be able to replace instrument with
another instrument when equipment is out of calibration
- Tests product samples.
- Required to perform physical tests on all product samples,
including grab, in process, and final samples. Must be able to
coordinate work responsibilities independently and report timely
and accurate results. Generally, lab tech responsibilities require
up to 10 hours of each shift to be spent on your feet. In addition,
the job requires manual dexterity to make fine measurements with
lab equipment, basic math skills to calculate test results, and the
ability to learn basic computer skills to enter data.
- Daily clean up of glassware and utensils after use.
- Used glassware and utensils are collected at the sink area for
hand washing or loading into an under the counter dishwasher, and
washing is accomplished by working at a waist-high counter and
sink. After cleaning is completed, each piece of glassware and/or
utensils is placed in wall cabinets or in drawers under the
counter.
- OTHER (MARGINAL) TASKS: On a regular basis retain samples are
filed. This requires the placement of 8 oz. sample containers in
bins on shelves under 4 feet high under the benches in the lab.
Bins weigh up to 50 pounds when full, and must be maneuvered from
shelf to shelf. The lab tech is required to cover overtime for
vacant shifts and extra testing from outside samples. Other duties
as assigned. Requirements
- Bachelors Degree or Associates Degree in Biology
- Judgment & discretion: ability to think critically to
troubleshoot lab errors
- Ability to learn & apply scientific theory behind tests
performed.
- Exhibit teamwork and strong communication to effectively work
with colleagues and supervisors/managers; including ability to
accurately describe scientific ideas and data analysis
- Serve as Quality representative in interactions with other
plant departments on off-hour shifts (e.g. performing equipment
inspections on night & weekend shifts)
- Must be capable of performing the duties of the position.
- Must possess basic computer skills (Microsoft Office)
- Must be able to learn to utilize computer programs such as
SAP
- Apply customer-centric focus: understands and applies
business's customer-focused strategies to deliver timely accurate
results, troubleshoot complaints, and ensure on-time deliveries
