Job Description:
HBI is currently seeking a Building Construction Technology
Instructor at Talking Leaves Job Corps Center in Tahlequah, OK.
GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION: Under the general direction of the
Regional Program Manager (RPM) instructs students using
HBI's-approved Residential Construction Academy (RCA) curriculum,
Green Building Standards and supplemental lesson plans including
the Learning Management System (LMS). Maintains a safe and orderly
training environment in accordance with HBI's safety program and
OSHA standards. Completes and submits various student and
program-related reports and evaluations, as required. Obtains
certification through HBI in partnership with the Ohio State
University Career Technical Instructor Training courses. POSITION
SUMMARY: Instructs students in OSHA 10/ 30-hours courses using
current information sheets and supporting materials emphasizing
proper use of tools and hardware, equipment use and care, wearing
of applicable (PPE) Personal Protective Equipment, and proper
safety precautions.Keeps accurate records in accordance with
Department of Labor (DOL)/OSHA and HBI requirementsClearly and in a
timely manner communicates with HBI Coordinator, RPM, and center
management projected student separation dates.Completes case notes
as directed by RPM to remain compliant with DOL required
documentation on student behavior and progress. Submits various
student and program-related reports and evaluations as
required.Maintains equipment inventories.Fosters positive
relationships with co-workers.Promotes strong work ethic and
employability skills among students.Acts as a positive role model
for students.Instructs students using current HBI trade curriculum
and develops information sheets and supporting materials
emphasizing proper use of tools and hardware, equipment use and
care, and proper safety precautions.Demonstrates all tasks specific
to the trade.Creates lesson plans and reviews Training Achievement
Records (TARs) to become familiar with the training sequence and
expected student learning rate.Works in cooperation with center
admissions staff and creates exploration procedures to provide
adequate trial period for students to determine their best career
path. Utilizes training stations in conjunction with Training
Achievement Records Supplements training with hands-on projects,
training stations, repair, or rehabilitation of on-site structures,
and approved off site projects. Assigns training in HBI Learning
Management System, Google classroom mind tap and other related
Distance or Blended learning venues Coordinates CTST (Career
Technical Skills Training) activities and rehabilitation projects
with other trade instructors.Participates in the development of
CTST projects, including costs, personnel needed, and
duration/completion estimates. Supervises work to be performed by
students on the projects, and coordinates tasks with other trades
instructor(s), if required.Create Purchase Orders while maintaining
individual program budget. Responsible for adequate supervision of
students assigned to his/her trade.Recommends students for job
placement, based on skills acquired, maturity level, and proper
work habits and attitude.Assists students with Job searches and
placementMaintains close contact with students upon graduation in
collaboration with Coordinator to secure job placement, employment
status changes and encourage participation with post Job Corps
activities for a minimum of one year. Ensures students files are
updated and accurate monthly, with special emphasis on students'
credentialsMeets all USDOL mandated criteria by which HBI programs
are evaluated.Maintains a safe and orderly shop in accordance with
HBI safety program, hygiene/ cleanliness protocols and OSHA
standards.Attends center meetings as applicable including but not
limited to Industry Advisory Council Meetings, CTT, CTST, Center
run DOL trainings, student projection meetings. Establishes and
maintains positive working relationships with local Home Builders
Association and Industry Union representatives.In Cooperation with
the HBI Coordinator actively promotes Apprenticeship placements and
Advanced Training in developing exit strategies with students
Demonstrates cost effectiveness and judicious use of HBI time and
materials.Promotes strong work ethic and employability skills among
students.Perform all other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Technical Skill Requirements Ability to obtain (company paid) OSHA
500 Train-the-Trainer status to complete student safety
training.Safe and proper use of hand tools, portable power tools
and stationary equipment.Explain basic principles of calculating
area, explain basic principles of fractions, addition and
subtraction of fractions, basic principles of decimal forms,
converting common fractions to decimal fractions, and vice versa,
and basic math principles to determine material
requirements.Measurement and Blueprint Identification.Temporary
Work Platforms.Shop safety: Demonstrates Lock Out/Tag Out
procedures, appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE),
identifies safe work site procedures, including fall protection,
confined and open work areas, and heavy equipment usage.Carpentry
Basics to include types of lumber and sheet goods, wall components,
door components, roofing materials and procedures, and flooring
materials and procedures.Plumbing Basics to include size and types
of pipes and fittings, common plumbing fixtures, and common
appliance components.Electrical Basics to include basic electrical
theory and terminology, commonly used electrical materials. (i.e.,
types of wires, boxes, anchors, connectors, and conduit and
commonly used electrical fixtures), Installation and
troubleshooting of electrical devices, GFCI receptacles and
fixtures.Painting Basics to include proper preparation,
application, material selection, patching and finishing of interior
and exterior surfaces.Landscaping Basics to include Maintaining
grounds including mowing, edging, planting, leaf raking/removal,
proper maintenance, storage, and use of landscaping equipment.HVAC
Basics to include Differentiate the types of HVAC systems, the
cleaning and preventative maintenance requirements, ability to
explain the importance of preventative maintenance in regard to
energy use. (i.e., changing filters, cleaning coils, and
replacing/adjusting belts and lubricate bearings. WORKING
RELATIONSHIPS: Internal: Job Corps support team, fellow
instructorsExternal: HBI and center partners, CTT Supervisor, all
other center staff REQUIRED SKILLS: Education: High School Diploma
or equivalent Experience/Skills/Core Competencies: At least five
years' experience in the applicable trade(s) that are taught or an
equivalent combination of education and trades-related experience
PREFERRED SKILLS:Possesses the ability to perform and demonstrate
all tasks specific to the trade.Ability to train and communicate
effectively with students in a hands-on and classroom
environment.Basic MS Office skills and data entry skills.Oral and
written communications skills (e.g., e-mails, case notes, student
evaluations)A current, valid state driver's license.Ability to
obtain Adult CPR/ First Aid/ AED and OSHA certification within a
reasonable amount of time. Proof of Vaccination Required Upon Hire.
